THE CHARLES ENVIRONMENTAL INTIATIVES

Here at The Charles, we are always trying to make our business more sustainable. We currently have a variety of procedures in place to do this.

Electricity: We have installed solar panels across our property as a renewable energy source. We have also incorporated energy efficient light bulbs throughout the business. Recently, we have installed three electric vehicle chargers at the property, open for everyone to use!

Water: The Charles Hotel has water efficient toilets and showers. Guests are always given the option to opt-out of daily room cleaning and are given the option to reuse their towels and bath mats.

Waste: We focus heavily on reduce, reuse, recycle. We have several separate waste bins onsite to ensure our waste is properly separated and disposed of accordingly. We have a paper and cardboard only recycling bin for office waste. To reduce paper usage in our office, we avoid printing where possible by using digital documents/forms and when printing, we try to only print double sided documents where applicable. All bottles and cans from the restaurant are collected separately to food and recycled accordingly. Many of the bottles and cans applicable for the 10 cent refund initiative are given to a local man to cash in who was not paid superannuation during his working career. The property makes an effort to reduce food wastage wherever we can. The used cooking oil from the kitchen is collected and recycled. Single use plastic straws are not used, instead we use biodegradable straws in our restaurant. Green waste from the restaurant is collected and composted.

Food & Beverage: The Charles prides itself on only sourcing local and regional produce for our dishes. For example, we source our cod from Aquna Sustainable Cod Farm located near Griffith; and the hazelnuts for our desserts come from the Happy Wombat Hazelnuts Farm near Batlow. Many of our herbs, such as mint and rosemary, are grown in our own wall planter. Not only are our food products sourced locally, so is our alcohol! Our extensive beverage list contains predominantly Australian producers. We are in the last stages of phasing out international liquors and alcoholic beverages to solely sell Australian produce. We buy from a variety of local, regional and national producers, including Borambola Winery, Riverina Gin, Poor Toms Distillery, Corowa & Co Distillery, The Aisling Distillery, Johansen Winery, Hugh Hamilton Winery and many, many more. We are proud locals supporting locals.
